The Fish Tee

In Madhubani art, the fish is one of the oldest and most sacred symbols, representing prosperity, fertility, and the flow of life itself. Painted for generations on the mud walls of Bihar's Mithila region, the fish motif has been part of wedding rituals, birth celebrations, and daily offerings long before it ever appeared on fabric.

This piece brings that symbol into the present. Four fish, each carrying a scene of everyday life inside them, stacked in a quiet, vertical arrangement drawn from the Japanese principle of negative space: let one thing breathe, and it says everything. The scenes within each fish are pure Madhubani, hand-painted figures, intricate linework, stories from daily life rendered in deep red on white.
