The Journey Behind Jeevan Dhara

Every garment has a beginning.

For us, that beginning isn’t found in a trend forecast or a mood board, but in a single, driving question: What story deserves to be told?

That question became the foundation of Jeevan Dhara, SHINSEI’s debut collection. Meaning “the flow of life,” Jeevan Dhara explores the invisible connections between people, nature, culture, and time. Every design within the collection reflects a different facet of that journey, yet they are all bound by one idea: life is constantly moving, evolving, and flowing forward.

Where It Began

The journey started with research. While exploring the visual language of Madhubani art, we were drawn to the recurring presence of fish, trees, birds, and elements of nature. These weren’t simply decorative motifs; they carried generations of stories, beliefs, and traditions.

Rather than reproducing an existing artwork, we collaborated with artist Sikindra to create original paintings inspired by this rich artistic tradition. Those paintings became the bedrock of our creative process. But they weren’t the final destination they were the beginning of a new story.

From Painting to Garment

Once the artworks were complete, our design team approached them with a fresh perspective. Instead of placing the paintings directly onto fabric, we carefully deconstructed every element, studied the visual language, and developed entirely new narratives from the original compositions.

The result wasn’t an illustration adapted for clothing; it was storytelling translated into design. This process gave birth to two distinct narratives: Macchuara and Mool se Manzil.

Macchuara

Macchuara follows the quiet rhythm of a fisherman’s life. Inspired by the symbolic importance of fish in Madhubani art, the design traces an entire day from preparing fishing nets at dawn to returning home at dusk. It celebrates a livelihood built on patience, resilience, and an enduring relationship with the river. One of the most important elements of the design is the hollow fish itself. Rather than functioning as a symbol alone, it becomes the space where the entire narrative unfolds, reminding us that human life often exists within the very systems that sustain it.

Mool se Manzil

If Macchuara is about livelihood, Mool se Manzil is about identity. Drawing inspiration from the Tree of Life, the design explores the relationship between our roots and our aspirations. The roots represent heritage and memory, while the branches reach toward exploration, growth, and the unknown. At the center of the composition is a human form, reminding us that identity is never fixed. We continue to grow, shaped by where we come from and where we choose to go.

Every Decision Matters

Design is only one part of the process. From selecting 100% mercerised cotton to refining each detail of production, every decision was made with the same intention: to create garments that honour the stories they carry. Many concepts never made it into the collection. Not because they lacked visual appeal, but because they lacked meaning.

At SHINSEI, we believe that good design should do more than look beautiful. It should make you pause, reflect, and perhaps even see something familiar in a different way.

Looking Ahead

Jeevan Dhara is our first collection, but it is only the beginning. As SHINSEI grows, every collection will continue to start the same way with research, collaboration, and a commitment to creating designs that carry stories worth wearing.
